Well – here’s my first shot at a video lesson, and I promise that l will get better as this goes along. For instance, next time, I might even show you the piano keys as I’m playing (not sure why I didn’t think to record this). I think you’ll still get the idea I was trying to convey, and if you are wondering what the actual chords are you can download my arrangement of the chart for this video here.
When we played it live, we “gospelized” this song by having our drummer play a swing beat over a four-on-the-floor kick pattern and it came out great. Obviously, there are multiple variations that you could do, but that’s what worked for us. Have fun with this new arrangement of this old hymn, and if you have any questions about the song you can email me: dj (at) danieljohnmusic (dot) com

Awesome. Give me five minutes with this information and I’ll be you…
Wait for it.
Nope. Never mind. It’s still cool info though.
Serenity – you can do it!! Tell me how it works out for you, or better yet, play it for me the next time I see you (at least the intro riff part).
Sure enjoyed this Dan and if you would have showed the keyboard I think I might have been able to do that myself and maybe have even added a few riffs (is that how you spell that?) myself. ๐
Your creativity is amazing and I admire it and am very blessed by it!
And, I love you with all my heart!!!
Dad
Thanks Dad – Felic and I laughed about that after I made the video – how you never see my hands. So then it looks like I don’t actually play the piano. I’m gonna have to show my hands (and the keyboard) next time so it is easier for everyone to understand. I’ll be looking forward to your new riffs too! ๐
Love it! Give me more!
thanks Jennie – I will be working on a new one on Sunday that should be up next week! I’m glad you like this, and if you have requests for stuff, let me know.
Brilliant ! I am not a musician, but I love many of the old hymns. I have to admit, at first I did not like the old standards “messed with” at all…but when I heard New Jersey Mass Choir doing some of them a few years ago, I was won over. I like what you’ve done so far, good success with it. Robyn (Molly’s mom : )
Thanks Robyn – I really appreciate your input here
Way cool. I pretty much didn’t understand anything, but I love the concept of giving away what you have to other people. Good call.
You have nice hair!! And you totally look like Drew in this video! Oh yeah the piano was cool too… I think maybe I’ll steal some of these and pretend I can lead worship from the piano sometime soon!! Love ya!
I think Jason’s on to something – you could play the piano parts, then we could do head-shot-only instructional videos where it makes it seem like we’re playing the piano. You could probably sell these pretty widely.
Really, this is great, Dan. Nice arrangement. Keep doing this. In fact, do you mind if I re-post these occasionally on the “Guest Room” page on my site?
Dan, I loved this! Even if we didn’t get to see your hands and the piano, it was nice seeing your face ๐ I even understood some of it although it’s been many years since I tried to play the piano. I love this idea and am glad you’re doing it! It’s going to help a lot of people!
thanks Kathy, Jason, Harold, and Mom – it was fun to make it, and I’m glad people are enjoying this. I am going to try and keep up on this, so I’ll be posting a new video next week
And – “yes” – Harold you can repost any of these that you would like to. Thanks!
