Hello, hello? Breaker, breaker… this is Daniel John….come back? Is anybody out there?
Quick update before we get to the music: I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve chatted. Most of you know this already, but for anyone looking in and wondering what I’m talking about, our family recently completed our move to Omaha, Nebraska back in August. It has taken us a while to find our groove, but we’re finding our way and this has been a really great season for our family. It hasn’t been without its bumps and challenges, but we are doing well and sometime soon I’ll give you the full update on our new life here.
Today though I thought it would be nice to start the blog back up by doing a little setlist sharing. Here’s the idea: a few weeks back my friend Rachel asked a bunch of us (via Facebook) about what our Easter services and setlists looked like. We all enjoyed sharing and hearing what each person was doing. No one had an identical setlist and it was beautiful to see the differences in our worship. Then, yesterday I (finally) sent an email to a friend with a bunch of song ideas I had been promising to send.
It struck me then that it might be nice to share some of the setlist ideas I’ve been collecting lately. After you read through this list maybe you could do the same and share some songs/setlists/ideas that you have been using?
I’ll go first – here are the 6 ideas I sent my friend yesterday:
1 – Passion – In Christ Alone – feat. Kristian Stanfill : a nice little update to this song & I have the chord chart if you need it.
2 – Passion – Here’s My Heart – feat. Crowder : great acoustic guitar song and sweet build at the VERY END of it. My friend Benson and I played this on Sunday along with my brother, Drew, and this song created an amazing moment for our community.
3 – Will Reagan & United Pursuit – Set A Fire – feat. Will Reagan : when we play this one we only use the main chorus “set a fire down in my soul…” and it has the same feel as the bridge of “the stand”. Basically it’s like throwing gasoline on the ol’ worship fire 🙂 Also, I’m sure the progression is 1 – 4 – 6 – 4… it’s pretty easy. Just start it low and then watch it take off…haha!
4 – Tim Hughes & Worship Central – Let It Be Known – feat. Tim Hughes : a newer upbeat song I heard from watching an online conference a few weeks ago. I’m always looking for fast songs and this one seems like it could be a lot of fun. I haven’t tried it live yet though.
5 – The Royal Royal – Praise Him – feat. Hillsong : super easy to play and another nice upbeat song. We use this one often and it’s a good solid congregational song.
6 – (medley) – Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)/Break Every Chain – feat. Gary Durbin : this idea is from a worship leader friend, Gary Durbin. He has the chart & audio clip for this on his blog (which is where this link leads you). This could be another great moment & I’m planning on using this idea soon.
Now it’s your turn – what setlist ideas are you using?
PS – I sent a bonus “sneak peak” to all who receive my newsletter about the upcoming details for our 2013 [5in5] event. I guarantee you won’t want to miss this year’s [5in5] songwriting event so sign up now using the box [to the right of this article] OR CLICK THIS LINK to be redirected to the signup page.
Liked the article and the energy and of course, I loved the picture! Good job D!
Thanks Dad! So you’re not gonna share your setlist ideas then? 😉
My schedule is quite full this week, but when things settle down a bit I might consider it! Thanks for the motivation to be my best and do my best and step out in faith!
I don’t actually create set lists, but these are cool ideas! I keep tossing around an idea in my head on how to make a medley of Break Every Chain and There’s Just Something About That Name (the old school song). I can hear it in my head, but not so good at relaying it so others understand.
Good to hear from you again and looking forward to 5-in-5 for sure!!
Nice one Carol – mind if I try it out? I think that could be a VERY powerful medley!
Also, really good to hear from you too!
Yes, please do! I’d love to hear what you come up with. 🙂
I’ve been wanting to use There’s Just Something About That Name as well! Would love to hear what you come up with, Dan.
…iel… Daniel… Oops.
Dan… Daniel…. Danny… it’s all good Jay, Remy, Jeremy 😉
I guess I’ll need to start working on that song then, huh? Any new songs you recommend checking out??
All of these aren’t what you may consider “new,” but these have been on our set-lists quite a bit recently: Stay and Wait – Hillsong (Houston), Victorious – Gateway Worship (Miller), and Show Us Christ – Sovereign Grace Ministries (Kaufflin).
Oops… Victorious was written by Walker Beach, not Thomas Miller. I should have done my homework first before posting. My apologies.
I think “Victorious” may have been the only one of those I know. No worries on the credit… I would have guessed Miller too.
Going to add these to my playlist today – thanks!!
Dude, you need to promise me that when I visit I can do some bassing with you… I miss the Nashville Numbers 🙂 Amazing Grace to Break Every chain is WICKED, love that mashup! My setlists are usually called playlists on Spotify – Currently I have Let it be Known by Worship Central, Forever Reign by One Sonic Society, Dominion by Citipointe Live and Oceans (reloaded) by Hillsong United.
I promise you can! I miss the Nashville Numbers and…..having a bass player…ha!
Can’t wait to check out those setlists/playlists – thanks Josh!
Love these. Thanks! I’ve been wanting to do In Christ Alone.
I think our church could easily pull off the rap part of Let It Be Known. We got lots of soul down here in the South. 🙂 When I clicked on the Praise Him link it took me to the Set a Fire link. Is this the Praise Him you were referring to?

A few choices came up when I typed in The Royal Royal Praise Him Feat. Hillsong on Youtube. There were lots of covers. I think this one is probably the best though.
You all could DEFINITELY pull off that rap AND probably come up with something a little better! Have Timothy do it…kidding 😉
Good catch on the link. I think it’s fixed now – thanks Anna!!
Kind of my ultimate setlist right now would be:
“Shekinah Glory” by Cory Asbury & Jaye Thomas @ IHOP
“Freedom” by William Matthews @ Bethel Live
“Your Great Name” by Krissy Nordhoff (although I really like the Anthony Evans version)
“Break Every Chain” by Will Reagan
“Encounter Me” by Aaron Lucas @ Citipointe Live
We have been also throwing some goodies-but-oldies in like “Ancient of Days” and “The Kingdom Song”, and I really love “Set A Fire” as well. At Life Church, we are hoping to introduce some new songs from the new Darlene Zschech CD “Revealing Jesus” of which I really love “In Jesus’ Name” and “Victor’s Crown”.
Thanks for the article and ideas!
I’ve been wanting to do the Royal Royal song “Praise Him” for a long time now and keep forgetting to teach it to my husband so we can teach it to the team! Good songs that we’ve been doing – “See His Love” done by Jesus Culture, “Carry Your Name” by Christy Nockels, and my favorite right now is “More Than Amazing” by Lincoln Brewster. There are others, but I’m a sleep deprived mom and my brain is fried at the moment so I can’t remember them. 🙂
kbluntsford – I REALLY like “Carry Your Name” and need to put that into a more regular rotation. I sang “More Than Amazing” back at Heartland with David Michael Sharpe. He and I both loved that song and would sometimes pair it with “I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous)”. But, it seemed like our congregation wasn’t quite as into it as we were. How does it go over for you?
I have been out of the loop for a while, with having a baby and all, so I haven’t had to make too many setlists lately! One song I’m sure you all do that I absolutely adore, though, is Israel Houghton’s “Jesus At The Center.” I could sing that song all day long and never, ever get tired of it. “Jesus, You’re Beautiful” by Jon Thurlough is another favorite. I’ve done “Our God” and “Let It Come” (Kathryn Scott – thanks for introducing me, Keira!) back-to-back before, and they work really well in and out of each other. I do both of those in the key of E, for you girls out there who don’t like the rafters. : ) We are going to introduce Bethel’s “I See Heaven” this month, probably, and our team tonight learned “In Jesus’ Name” from Darlene Zschech’s new album Andrew was talking about. Even though we didn’t have electric guitar tonight, that song still ROCKED. And I’ll just mention one more… Paul Baloche’s “King of Heaven” is a monster of a song. It’s so powerful. Our church loves it, and it’s a great starter song to get your heart praising, or works to take you into worship. Cool song ideas, everyone! I have a lot to listen to now!
Ruth Pingel – I had completely forgotten about “Let It Come”… love that one too!
Thanks to you and Andrew David Fajkus my spotify list is now stocked up – thanks!!
Loved reading all this! Time to hit spotify. I have to agree with Ruth i love “Jesus at the center” right now, “let it be known” and “oceans” ……good stuff, not in that order…..but you know….
And “oh our Lord” ….Baloche
Some of my favorites right now:
Dominion (CitiPointe) This song kind of exploded in our church when it got to the Bridge. There is something about worshiping with a bunch of people who have very fresh, vivid memories of their unsaved state that makes, “You have rescued me, You took a wretch like this and You loved me and You saved me” so very raw, and humbling, yet overflowing with joy unspeakable… Also, I wish you could hear Jordan Palmer and a friend most of you don’t know yet, Amanda Russman’s harmonies on this song. Face meltingly good. I prefer to be in the congregation when we sing this song so it’s no so distracting when I end up in a puddle under a chair somewhere.
Ready for You (Worship Central) Getting ready to introduce this one, possibly at Bible College graduation. Simple but I love it. Good call to worship or altar call song.
You Won’t Relent (Jesus Culture) I know this is older, but it’s hot in the altar call queue for us.
Jesus at the Center (Israel’s version) From my heart to the heavens. Come on now.
Be Lifted High (Bethel Live) This one was a creeper for me. It’s
one of those songs that when you first hear it sounds way more
complicated than it is. It starts with the chorus and I’m easily
confused. But the build, especially on the second verse makes me want to
jump out of my skin.
And of course I love the ones I know that have been mentioned here already. Going to go look up the ones I don’t. Thanks friends. I love this sharing stuff.
mollynick – I was curious what you guys were loving lately – great list!!
sidenote: I heard you all do “Dominion” on the livestream during Missions Conference. It sounded great and you could tell people were responding well to it.
I’m glad Josh mentioned Oh Our Lord (Baloche). Powerful bridge. And I forgot to mention Shout for Joy (Brewster) it’s a great upbeat song, and is yet another song with a great build in the bridge. That must be what kicks my deal over. 🙂
Sorry to be a couple of days behind on this…..my favorite, most recent set list: 10,000 reasons straight into The earth is yours ( super fun to go slow to fast….it surprises everyone!) I Surrender from Cornerstone.
RachelRihanekBurnett – never to late to show up to this party..ha! Great setlist & ideas!!
